HIGH DENSITY ON HIGH GROUND

New Orleans, Louisiana
Competition Entry with Ryan DelaHoussaye 2006

With the rebuilding of New Orleans comes an unprecedented responsibility for architects to create an environment for its inhabitants that is mindful of the city’s rich cultural history while at the same time developing design that is innovative and forward-thinking. The proposed high-density housing provides more than one hundred sixty diverse apartment units. Engagement at the street level is vital to creating an active communal front porch and yard for the shared community and mixed-use development. The exterior of the building is a reinterpretation of existing typologies, broken down proportionally and shifted relative to one another. Sustainable design features include green roofs, rainwater collection/graywater system, high-ceiling and interior transoms to maximizing cross-ventilation, deep porches/overhangs on south façade, local and recycled materials, and native vegetation.
